It has been a few weeks since we released any qualifying picks as the Sprint Cup Series circuit made stops at place like Daytona, Michigan, and Pocono which is not necessarily strong tracks for qualifying wagers. However, from the qualifying aspect of the betting slip, Kenseth should be a much bigger underdog to Busch in this situation. Rowdy has posted an outstanding 4.8 average start position over his last 4 races compared to Kenseth’s 18.3 average start position during that same stretch. Busch also holds the edge in career statistics with an 11.7 average starting position in 18 races compared to Kenseth’s 20.4 average starting position in 28 races. Additionally take into consideration Rowdy’s last two qualifying efforts on tracks of a mile or less (Dover and Martinsville), he has started on the front row in each of those races.
Kasey Kahne +100 over Ryan Newman (2 units)
Another match-up we feel strong about is Kasey Kahne over Ryan Newman. Both drivers have been impressive in recent history in terms of qualifying. Newman holds a 7.5 average start position in the last 4 races compared to Kahne’s 4.3 start position during that stretch. Between the two averages, neither driver seems to hold any true value in terms of differential margins. However the #31 team has struggled to get Newman on par with his recent and career starting averages thus far in 2014 which appears to be a product of Richard Childress Racing cars subpar qualifying trends. Remember how severely Kevin Harvick struggled with qualifying the past few years? Well that has actually been a constant throughout the entire RCR camp especially at the 1-1.5 mile race tracks and we have not found anything indicating any immediate change. Therefore, expect Kasey Kahne to edge out Newman possibly in the 2nd round of knockout qualifying this Friday.
