Jeff Gordon wins at the Brickyard

After a dramatic afternoon at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Jeff Gordon took advantage of a late restart with less than 25 laps to go and was able to pass Kasey Kahne to win his 5th Brickyard 400. Gordon trailed Kahne by a few car lengths for nearly 15 consecutive laps as the two cars battled for the lead following the last round of green flag pit stops. Gordon had the fastest car but the clean air was keeping Kasey Kahne out front. Once the caution flew on lap 139 with 21 laps to go, Kahne appeared to be destined to score his 1st victory of 2014. Gordon had been awful on restarts all afternoon and all Kahne needed was a good restart to get that clean air to keep him out front for the few remaining laps. However when the green flag dropped to resume the race, Gordon got a tremendous restart on the outside of Kahne and was able to pull out into the lead by going around the #5 on the outside of turn 1. Gordon cleared Kahne and held off Kyle Busch for the final 15 laps to earn his 2nd win of 2014. The win marked Gordon’s 5th win at the Brickyard passing Jimmie Johnson for most wins all-time at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Gordon won the inaugural 1994 Brickyard 400 and today returns to victory lane 20 years following that landmark victory.
