Where: Darlington Raceway

On Saturday, NASCAR’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Series returns to action at Darlington Raceway in what promises to be exciting racing! For the 2nd day in a row, Darlington will host a star-studded lineup, filled with some of the biggest names in the sport, via Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, and Ross Chastain. All 3 of those drivers are former winners at Darlington among NASCAR’s top 3 touring series and will be stepping into top rated equipment at J.R. Motorsports and Joe Gibbs. Needless to say, those 3 Cup Series stars will be heavy betting favorites going into Saturday’s on-track festivities. Let’s take the time to discuss who is worthy of betting consideration and should be among your betting race picks at Darlington!

As many are aware, Darlington Raceway is an extremely difficult driving test for drivers due to the low-grip conditions and overall layout which features a very narrow racing surface. The most talented drivers in the field, whether it is a Truck Series, O’Reilly Series, or Cup Series event, are going to shine at this style of race track because lap speed is as much about the driver as it is about equipment/setup. For that reason alone, Darlington is personally my favorite track to watch as a spectator. From a betting perspective, it is not ideal for an O’Reilly Series event to feature 3 of the best talents in the sport because we know those drivers are going to be heavy favorites. At Darlington, it is especially difficult because those drivers are going to be overvalued even more which makes ROI a consistent concern when attempting to compile a betting card.

Based on current betting odds, all 3 of the Cup Series entries are receiving saturated numbers. Even Justin Allgaier is currently listed at sub 7-1 betting odds making it a total of 4 drivers that are receiving less than 7-1 odds and I would handicap the likelihood of one of those drivers winning as extremely high. As a result, I must advise bettors that Saturday’s Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help a Hero 200 will be one of those events where we must be really conservative unless we have high confidence that we can narrow our betting focus down to just 1 or 2 of the outright favorites. From there, we must put a premium towards focusing on H2H match-up and props in hopes to produce the best sharp value!

Darlington – O’Reilly Notes

  • Justin Allgaier has the most wins (3) among active drivers.
  • Brandon Jones (2), Christopher Bell, and Kyle Larson are the only additional drivers to score a win at Darlington.
  • Justin Allgaier has 3 wins, 6 top 5 finishes, and has never finished outside the Top 10 in the last 9 races at Darlington.
  • Kyle Larson has finished 7th or better in 8 of his 9 career starts at Darlington.
  • Christopher Bell has finished 7th or better in 3 of 5 career starts at Darlington.
  • Sheldon Creed has finished in the Top 10 in 5 of 6 of the last races at Darlington.
  • Austin Hill has finished in the Top 10 in 8 of 9 career starts at Darlington.
  • Outside of last year’s win, Brandon Jones has finished 10th or worse in 5 of the last 6 races at Darlington.
  • Jesse Love has never finished worse than 11th in 3 career starts at Darlington.
  • Sam Mayer has finished 11th or worse in 3 of the last 4 races at Darlington.
  • Ross Chastain has finished 12th or worse in 4 of his last 5 starts at Darlington.
  • Toyota drivers have won 3 of the last 4 races at Darlington.
  • There have been 7 cautions or less in each of the last 4 races at Darlington.
  • The eventual race winner has started in the Top 7 positions in the last 7 races at Darlington.

Betting Targets

I may sound like a square but I obviously believe Kyle Larson is the man to beat going into Saturday. Larson won last week despite being very critical of the car throughout the weekend at Las Vegas. At a place where the driver holds even more value compared to setup/equipment, I find it hard to look away from Larson in any betting format despite the fact that there is absolutely 0 value from an odds perspective. Luckily, we already have Larson in the 2nd leg of a parlay with Corey Heim winning on Friday night which greatly helps us conserve overexposure. Outside of Larson, if I were to make another play among the favorites, I would probably select Justin Allgaier. Not only are Allgaier’s stats extremely impressive but we have also seen that the full-time teams have consistently outperformed the teams that feature part-time drivers like the Cup Series guys.

Beyond the heavy favorites, I don’t really have a high confidence level that any other driver will win. However, if we learned anything in Friday’s truck race, it is that we can expect some unexpected names at the front of the field. If I had to guess, I would guess that Jesse Love and Corey Day would be the drivers that exceeded expectations. Love has averaged a plus 90 average driver rating through all 3 career starts at Darlington. Meanwhile, Day has been showing he is ready to take the next step which was highlighted with last week’s performance at Las Vegas. Needless to say, I believe both drivers are prime to turn-in a quality performance at Darlington which makes both drivers sharp betting targets in H2H match-ups.

Deeper into the field, I would expect that Nick Sanchez and Rajah Caruth are targets that I would expect to move forward from their qualifying positions and be ideal in fantasy formats unless they qualify better than expected.
