In just a few hours, the green flag will wave on the start of the newly named Xfinity Series with the running of the Alert Today Florida 300 at Daytona International Speedway. As anticipation builds for tomorrow’s Daytona 500, the Xfinity Series will take center stage today with a full field of talented drivers including several big name drivers from the Sprint Cup Series that are expected to contend in the 500 like Dale Earnhardt Jr, Kyle Busch, Kyle Larson, Austin Dillon and Brad Keselowski. However, there are several other drivers that are looking to capitalize at their opportunity at Daytona International in today’s 120 lap race.
Everyone that follows racing, understands that restrictor plate racing levels the playing field and provides the opportunity for lesser known drivers to earn a victory just as Tyler Reddick accomplished in last night’s Camping World Truck Series race at Daytona. However, today’s Xfinity Series field is completely loaded with talent. Outside of the Sprint Cup guys mentioned earlier, Ty Dillon (also running in the Daytona 500 tomorrow), last year’s race winner Regan Smith, reigning series champion Chase Elliot, Erik Jones, and Darrell Wallace Jr are just a few of the other extremely talented drivers that will suit up in today’s prestigious event at Daytona.
If you are trying to pick a winner out of the group today, good luck! There are seriously a dozen or more guys with a good shot of winning this race. Even guys like Erik Jones and Darrell Wallace Jr, who do not have much Xfinity Series experience, cannot be ignored. Both drivers are in good cars and have enough talent to mix it up towards the front. Regan Smith is a known monster of restrictor plate racing in this series and do we even have to mention the talent of Chase Elliot? Perhaps the better question that surrounds today’s race is who will win between the Cup Series or the Xfinity Series drivers? A strong case could be made for both sides.
From a handicapping perspective, this is a race that does not provide a ton of upside. In fact if you are not just a fan of NASCAR, it might be best to stay away from this race. However, we understand that the lore of Daytona causes the need to throw out some money towards a few drivers as we celebrate the start of a new season. Not to mention, odds are pretty good at Daytona so it is hard to fight off the urge to not throw a few bets towards a potential big winner to get your 2015 season started off on the right foot. Just remember, the true handicapping does not start until a few races into the season.
