Last week, Nashville Superspeedway delivered one of the best finishes of the season in a 3-way last lap battle between Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell, and Chase Briscoe. In the end, Hamlin emerged victorious to capture his 2nd win of the season and the 62nd of his career. This week the Cup Series rolls into the Irish Hills for high-speed racing at Michigan International Speedway with the running of the FireKeepers Casino 400. Coincidentally, Hamlin is also the defending winner of the FireKeepers Casino 400 which means the driver of the #11 will once again be the outright betting favorite to capture another checkered flag!
Over the last several weeks, the Toyota teams have been nearly unstoppable in the speed department. The Toyota speed was on full display last week in Nashville. Not only did the Joe Gibbs Racing cars produce a 1-2-3 finish but 4 of the top 5 cars throughout the race belong to the Toyota department. Obviously, the speed from the Toyota teams cannot be ignored especially at a track like Michigan International Speedway where speed is so important. Michigan is the biggest non-superspeedway oval on the circuit and produces very high speeds. Therefore, we should expect that the Toyotas will be strong again this week if their speed from the intermediate venues can carry over to the two-mile layout at Michigan as expected.
Despite knowing that the Toyotas should have the advantage in the speed department, this week’s race at Michigan will be a lot more difficult to handicap compared to previous races over the last few weeks. While Michigan produces high-speed racing, the large two-mile layout also produces some of the most intense strategy battles from pit-road. Drivers and teams will be gambling on fuel/tire strategy throughout the afternoon in an effort to gain precious track position. The teams that are able to nail the strategy component of Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400 will undoubtedly be in the mix for the victory in the closing laps. Therefore, we must consider a lot of volatility in the strategy game going into tomorrow’s race!
I don’t always discuss every handicapping angle that I consider for each venue week over week because the handicapping angles vary based on the venue. However, Michigan International Speedway is a tricky track to handicap so I wanted to discuss what I am looking for briefly before locking-in betting selections. For starters, we are looking at the “speed” factor that has been apparent all season. We can look at some of our dynamic averages that show how drivers/teams have trended in recent weeks for potential considerations. Momentum seems to be parallel with performances in prior Michigan races. Next, we should look closely at prior performances at Michigan. This track is unique and there are drivers that seem to perform well each year at Michigan. Additionally, I would also encourage bettors to explore the teams/drivers that seem to gamble a lot on strategy calls. Those strategy calls could be the difference in a strong or poor result on Sunday!
Cup Series teams and drivers participated in a 60-minute practice session on Saturday which was split into 30-minutes sessions between two groups. At the end of both sessions, Tyler Reddick emerged as the fastest man in town. Reddick posted the fastest single lap speed of the afternoon at 192.622mph. More importantly, Reddick also posted the best 5 and 10 lap consecutive averages which confirmed that the #45 has some serious speed this weekend. Behind Reddick, Hamlin was also fast as well as most of the other Toyotas. However, I took notice of the speed shown from the Hendrick Motorsports cars. Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, and William Byron were all really solid on the stopwatch. In fact, Elliott, Larson, and Byron were all among the top 5 fastest cars in terms of consecutive averages. Byron even posted the best 15 lap averages which tends to show that the Hendrick Motorsports cars have found some extra speed this week.
Overall, I thought the Ford teams struggled from a manufacturing perspective. Chris Buescher showed some good speed in the opening practice group during cooler track conditions. Buescher and Ryan Blaney were the only Ford drivers that finished in the top 15 in terms of single lap speeds. Additionally, most of the Ford teams were far down the single lap charts and the consecutive average charts. Needless to say, I don’t think the Ford teams are trending in the right direction going into tomorrow’s race. Of course the Ford drivers were not the only ones that struggled on Saturday. Among some of the more popular names that have performed well in recent weeks, Chase Briscoe, Alex Bowman, and Shane Van Gisbergen were among the drivers that appeared relatively “off” in the speed department. To make matters slightly worse, cars were impounded following practice/qualifying on Saturday which means they will not be able to make any additional adjustments until the green flag on Sunday!
Based on various handicapping angles, Denny Hamlin and Tyler Reddick stand out as the best two options going into Sunday. Hamlin and Reddick have been the best drivers in the Cup Series this season in terms of “speed” and both drivers also have relatively strong resumes at Michigan. If I had to pick between the two, I would pick Hamlin. However, Reddick is checking on many of the same handicapping angles. Outside the top two favorites, it’s hard to find betting value. Christopher Bell, Carson Hocevar, and Chase Briscoe are listed at less than 10-1 odds, however those drivers are barely hitting on any handicapping indicators. Meanwhile, drivers like Kyle Larson, Ty Gibbs, and Chase Elliott are hitting on multiple handicapping indicators and have better betting value. Personally, I think Gibbs and Larson hold the best sharp value among the 2nd-tier favorites.
In terms of dark horses, I believe Chris Buescher is the best value on the board. Buescher has always been really strong at Michigan and qualified the best among the group 2 competitors. While I have concerns about the speeds from the Ford teams, Buescher is one of the best options from the Ford camp. As we dive deeper into the field, I believe it becomes a bigger guessing game towards predicting who could break out at Michigan and contend for a victory. Personally, I don’t have any confidence in many other drivers. What I will say is that drivers like Erik Jones, Zane Smith, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr are performing much better than current betting odds suggest. All 3 of those drivers have produced strong results and/or performed really well in recent weeks. As a result, those drivers can be targeted in H2H, prop, and even fantasy formats. Based on starting position and place differential upside, Josh Berry, Ross Chastain, and Alex Bowman are strictly candidates for fantasy purposes!
