It has been nearly a month since Layne Riggs secured his fourth victory of the season at the inaugural San Diego Naval Base Coronado street race. Riggs has undeniably become the hottest driver in the Craftsman Truck Series, boasting 3 wins in his last 4 starts. During this dominant stretch, Riggs seized the outright points lead and has comfortably maintained that lead for the past six weeks. It comes as no surprise that Riggs enters Saturday’s LiUNA 150 at Lime Rock Park as the heavy betting favorite. When you combine his recent hot streak with the fact that he has already obtained victories in 2 of the 3 road course races this season, Riggs enters this weekend’s festivities at Lime Rock Park as the driver to beat by a relatively wide margin!

Saturday’s LiUNA 150 marks just the second time the Truck Series will tackle Lime Rock Park. In last year’s inaugural event, Corey Heim put on an absolute clinic, dominating the track’s debut by leading 99 of the 100 laps en route to victory. However, bettors should expect a different dynamic this time around. While last season’s race was primarily a test of which team brought the best off-the-truck setup and simulator preparation, this year’s race will be much different. With teams now possessing real track data, this weekend will be a true test of pure road course skills and overall talent.

Fortunately, the Truck Series has already competed at 3 different road course/street course venues this season. As a result, we have some reliable performance data to consider when handicapping this Saturday’s return to Lime Rock Park. The good news for bettors is that this is an isolated event for the Truck Series. Both the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and the Cup Series are competing at EchoPark Speedway this weekend. As a result, we don’t have any drivers from the higher series in the field. Therefore, we can solely put our focus on how the Truck Series regulars have performed on the road/street courses. Once we have those metrics, we will have a solid handicapping baseline. From there, we can consider things like last year’s results at Lime Rock Park, current equipment, and recency bias to finalize our betting thoughts!

Performance Data

Below, I have compiled loop data for the 3 road/street course races the Truck Series has competed at this season which was St. Petersburg, Watkins Glen, and most recently San Diego. The good news about these races is that there were minimal cautions for the most part. Therefore, we don’t have many small sample outliers with drivers crashing out early that would significantly impact their overall average. As a result, I believe these metrics are a solid handicapping baseline for the Truck Series regulars and part-time drivers.

Betting Targets

Practice and qualifying will not take place until Saturday morning. I think that is an important note because I would like to see practice speeds before finalizing our betting thoughts. With that said, I think we can make some sound expectations prior to practice. The obvious choice is that Layne Riggs remains the main to beat going into Saturday. Despite the fact that Corey Heim dominated last year’s race, Layne Riggs was actually the 2nd highest rated driver in that race. Riggs has the prior Lime Rock performance data on his side, the recency bias, and is the top rated road course driver by a wide margin. As a result, Riggs is deservingly a heavy favorite for the LiUNA 150. With that being said, Riggs does not hold a lot of betting value at his current odds. We could choose to parlay Riggs with some of the other races this weekend but that is risky considering the other races are at a highly unpredictable drafting venue. Before we move into options behind Riggs, let me make one important note. Lime Rock Park is a road course but it is a road course with a lot of long-straightaways which makes raw speed an important component combined with the road course skill set.

While we would want some exposure to Riggs, I think the circumstances require us to downsize our overall risk and potentially pivot to better value options. Kaden Honeycutt and Gio Ruggiero have proven to be fast everywhere and are underrated road course talents. Honeycutt won earlier this year at Watkins Glen. However, both TRICON Garage drivers are getting minimal value as well. To find value, I think we would need to pivot further back to the likes of Ty Majeski and Chandler Smith. Both drivers have shown strong speed in recent weeks, have shown strong skills at the road/street courses, and are hitting on nearly all handicapping angles. Majeski finished in the runner-up position at Lime Rock Park last year. As a result, both drivers can be considered in all formats. If we look even deeper into the field, I believe the likes of Landen Lewis and Daniel Hemric are sharp H2H options that should out-perform drivers within their betting range. Lewis may be one of the most underrated options in the field. The part-time driver has finished no worse than 6th in his two starts this year on the road courses and has looked solid with each appearance. As a result, Hemric and Lewis can also be considered in all formats, especially H2H/prop formats.
